Google Pay gets support for NFC-based card payments in India

Last year, Google announced that it was planning to bring support for card payments to Google Pay in India. The company has now started rolling out support for NFC-based credit and debit card payments for the Indian users.

Earlier this month, users started seeing card options in Google Pay and now the company has started the broader rollout of the feature to Pay users. Google has also published a couple of support pages to help with the initial setup and the first transaction. Unfortunately, Google Pay supports only a handful of credit and debit cards at the moment. According to the support page, users can only add Axis Bank Visa Credit, Axis Bank Visa Debit, and SBI Visa Credit Cards to Google Pay at the moment. If you own one of the aforementioned cards then you can follow the steps below to add your credit or debit card to Google Pay:

  • Open Google Pay and tap on your profile picture on the top right corner.
  • Navigate to Settings > Payment methods and tap on the 'Add Card' option. You can either select your existing card or add a new card.
  • Add the relevant card details and your address and tap on 'continue'.
  • Accept Google's terms and conditions and wait for the app to verify your card. You may receive an OTP from your bank additional authentication. You can either let Google read the OTP message or manually enter the code to authenticate.
  • Once done, you will get an option to Activate the card for use. Tap on 'Activate' to receive an OTP on your phone number linked to Google Pay.
  • Enter the OTP and your card should be ready for use.

Google is still in the middle of the rollout so you may have to wait for a couple of days to receive the card options. The company has gone with a server-side update so installing the latest APK file may not help you unlock the new feature. Google, however, did roll out an update last night so you should download and install it before trying out the new feature. You can download the latest Google Pay update from the Google Play Store.
