YouTube Premium starts offering automatic downloads for new videos

YouTube Premium is apparently getting another new feature to make it more convenient to use the video service. The subscription already allows users to watch videos in picture-in-picture mode on Android or listen to videos in the background, as well as download videos to watch offline. Now, it's making it possible to make these downloads automatically.

As reported by Android Police, some YouTube Premium users may now see a banner asking them if they want to set up automatic downloads for videos, based on certain topics the user is interested, or simply new videos from channels the user has subscribed to.

The feature should make it easier for people to keep up with the latest videos from their latest creators, and it's somewhat reminiscent of Netflix's Smart Downloads. Videos will be downloaded for offline use, so they'll be available to watch even when the user isn't connected to the internet.

It's not currently clear if the feature is rolling out to everyone, or if it's limited to certain regions or platforms. We've reached out to Google for clarification.
