Xiaomi debuts the Mi Mix Fold, its first foldable phone with a massive 8.01-inch display

In 2019, Xiaomi first showed off a foldable smartphone prototype with a double-folding design that allowed its massive screen to be bent back on the left and right edges, transforming the tablet-sized device into a more phone-like form factor. The prototype never made it to a commercial version, but Xiaomi announced the Mi Mix Alpha, instead, with a screen that wrapped nearly the entire phone.

Today, Xiaomi unveiled a new foldable phone that looks pretty much like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup and Huawei’s Mate X2. The Mi Mix Fold uses a more conventional folding style that features a bigger screen inside and a smaller one on the outside.

The larger screen measures 8.01 inches with a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 2480 x 1860 resolution. It uses an OLED panel with support for HDR10+, a 60Hz refresh rate, and a 120Hz touch sampling rate. The display also features Dolby Vision HDR and Xiaomi claims it can withstand up to 200,000 bends based on reliability testing. The phone's outer screen is a 6.5-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, 27:9 screen ratio, and a 2520 x 840 resolution.

Under the hood, the device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. It also packs a 5,020mAh battery with 67W fast charging support that Xiaomi claims can get you a full charge within 37 minutes.

Optics-wise, the Mix Fold has a 108MP primary sensor, 13MP ultra-wide angle camera, and an 8MP shooter with a liquid lens technology. The liquid lens system is the first of its kind for a smartphone camera and it allows for a 3x optical zoom, up to 30x telephoto, and a minimum focus distance of 3cm. The rear camera also uses Xiaomi's Surge C1 image processing chip. On its front, there's a 20MP selfie snapper.

For connectivity, the foldable phone features Dual 5G stand-by and Wi-Fi 6. The device also packs a punch in the audio department with Harman Kardon-tuned quad speakers, 3D panoramic sound system, and dual 1216 speakers.

The Mix Fold will ship in black and Ceramic Special Edition. It's initially available for pre-order in China from today, with shipping scheduled on April 16. It will retail for ¥9,999 (~$1,521) for the 12GB/256GB memory configuration, ¥10,999 (~$1,674) for the 12GB/512GB variant, and ¥12,999 (~$1,978) for the 16GB/512GB version.
